John Bray, Petra Maurer and Andrea Butcher, eds. Tibet Journal Vol. 40 (2015), No. 2. Special Issue on Ladakh: Historical Perspectives and Social Change. The volume contains a total of 11 papers on broadly ‘Tibetological’ themes, including the region’s political and religious history, contemporary development and social issues, and Ladakhi understandings of colour. Most of the papers were presented at the 16th international conference of the International Association for Ladakh Studies (IALS) in Heidelberg in April 2013, together with two additional contributions from Rob Linrothe and Nawang Jinpa.

Erberto Lo Bue & John Bray, eds. Art and Architecture in Ladakh. Cross-cultural Transmissions in the Himalayas and Karakoram. Leiden: Brill. 438 pp. The book consists of 17 research papers, mainly drawn from the 2007, 2009 and 2011 IALS conferences. Their topics range widely over time, from prehistoric rock art to mediaeval Buddhist stupas and wall paintings, as well as early modern castle architecture, the inter-regional trade in silk brocades, and the challenges of 21st century conservation. Taken together, these studies complement each other to provide a detailed view of Ladakh’s varied cultural inheritance in the light of the latest research. This book presents a selection of 34 papers on the history, art, language, culture and natural environment of Ladakh. Between them, they provide a succinct overview of many of the key themes of contemporary research on Ladakh. The majority of the papers were first presented at the 11th IALS colloquium which took place in Leh and Choglamsar from 21-25 July 2003, and was co-hosted by the Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages.
